‘I just needed vodka and good lighting’: Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke on getting naked
The Game of Thrones actress had sworn off nude scenes.
GAME
of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has told how she had no problem stripping
off for the hit TV series — after a quick drink and a bit of technical
help.
The British beauty, Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s epic fantasy drama, told The Sun: “All I needed was vodka and some flattering lighting and I was ready.”Emilia — who had previously signed a no-nudity clause — shocked fans with the full-frontal scene in a recent Thrones episode.
But she insists she was right to make the drastic U-turn and said it was “empowering” when Daenerys — the Mother of Dragons — walked through an inferno to emerge naked.
And some alcohol left in her dressing room by the show’s creators worked wonders in making her feel comfortable enough to disrobe.
Emilia, 29, said: “It was just a wonderful, strong moment I wanted to own, a real empowering, girl-power wow scene.
“I was so thrilled with it. It’s not a sexy scene, she’s not naked for no reason, it’s not gratuitous. She’s naked because she’s just destroyed her enemies in this almighty blaze after they underestimated her.
“She played her trump card — how could I say no?”
But now she has sought to set the record straight, saying: “If a nude scene forwards a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters, I’m perfectly fine with it.
“Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters or story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle.”
Even so, Emilia did seem to be set on her no-nudity stance when she revealed she had turned down the lead role of Ana Steele in last year’s 50 Shades Of Grey film.

She was also unsettled when she appeared naked in a 2013 Broadway stage production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and audience members shared their snaps of her, causing the theatre to increase security.
But for her latest headline-grabbing strip, Emilia actually turned down the offer of a body double — unlike her co-star Lena Headey, who had previously relied on a stand-in to play a naked Cersei Lannister.
Emilia said: “This is all me, all proud, all strong. That ain’t no body double. I’m just feeling genuinely happy I said yes.”
At the same time she has been outspoken about the extreme amount of female-only nudity on the program, lobbying its producers to “free the penis” and flash as much male flesh.
